Overactive Bladder - No surgery for me!
by Janet Winters
Three years ago, after the birth of our 3rd child, I returned to aerobics class two times per week. After four weeks, as my efforts were increasing, I began losing bladder control during the beginning of the cardiovascular session. At first I thought I was mistaken, this couldn't be happening. Secondly I thought, "Thank goodness I'm at the back of the class and I'm lucky I wore black."
Next class, I went to the washroom immediately before aerobics started and, to my surprise, the same thing happened. I called my doctor who set up a referral with my gynecologist, who said this was a very common occurrence after delivering nine-pound babies. He recommended bladder repair surgery, which would only last for 10 years at best, or a hysterectomy to take the weight off my bladder. Major surgery was not at all what I wanted to hear. I sought a second opinion. This time I was told that one out of any five women chosen at random would lose bladder control. Surgery was not recommended, although it was something to think about perhaps ten to fifteen years down the road. I was told that "Depends" undergarments during aerobics would be the only answer for me, aside from discontinuing aerobics. As the weeks went on, I found I was unable to run across the street or make any quick movements without an accident. How embarrassing.
I had been bringing my son to Dr. Hardick for digestive problems, and, after attending the information session, I started to think that maybe there was help for me, too. After a few months of adjustments, I am now able to jog very comfortably. Due to the extracurricular activity of 3 children, I don't have time to fit aerobics into my schedule at this time, but I know in the years to come it won't be a problem.
Thank you so much Dr. Hardick and team for educating me and helping my body to run efficiently.
