An earache can result when the eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear with the throat, enlarges and becomes inflamed. This prevents proper drainage. Fluids can become trapped behind the eardrum, often putting painful pressure on delicate tissues.
A common treatment is the use of antibiotics. However, antibiotics only treat bacterial infections, and it has been reported that only 30% of ear infections are caused by bacteria, and 70% are caused by viruses. As a result, antibiotics can prolong the problem and increase its reocurrence. In fact, in the United States, the federal guideline for the treatment of ear inections is to first do nothing at all.
"Tubes in the ears?" The most drastic approach involves cutting a small hole in the eardrum. A small tube is implanted to drain the middle ear. Results are typically short-lived, invite infection, and produce complications by scar tissue formation, the most extreme being potential hearing loss.
For years, our patients have testified to the benefits of chiropractic care, particularly for children who experience ear infections. Many studies have validated the relationship between the nervous system and the immune system. Further, the muslces surrounding the eustachian tube are controlled by the nerves which come from upper part of the neck, and subluxations in the cervical spine can alter the function of these nerves. While chiropractic care doesn't treat earaches, it often revives the body's own inborn healing ability naturally -- without drugs or surgery.
