Positive Results for Attention Deficit Disorder Brooke Sheehan, 5 years old

"It is as if she is seeing the world for the first time." by Del Sheehan

Two weeks ago, my daughter Brooke was a different person! A few years ago, Brooke had been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Now, after five adjustments at Hardick Chiropractic Centre, it is as if Brooke is seeing the world for the first time, and understanding it.

Growing up, Brooke was a little behind at learning to walk and talk. She could not focus, learn numbers or letters, and she had a very hard time remembering the things she had done. Many times a day, Brooke would have to be reminded of what she was supposed to be doing. She would ask the same question over and over because her memory and concentration were so poor. Brooke had a difficult time speaking, and very few people could understand her.

We had tried Ritalin, Efalex, and other drugs. We introduced Brooke to a tutor, and she was given extra help at school from the literacy teacher, in an attempt to bring her up to kindergarten level. Brooke received extensive speech therapy inside and out of the school, which involved countless hours of teaching her numbers, letters, and printing, but results did not come. We received no answers from hearing tests and vision tests, which all tested normal.

I had learned about chiropractic care from some patients of Hardick Chiropractic Centre at a group meeting. There, some of the mothers had described some very good results. I thought, “how could her neck and spine being out of line be shutting off her brain function, and causing learning problems?” I thought it was just another crazy idea for me to try. But, as nothing else had seemed to work, and no one had any of the answers I was looking for, what did we have to lose?

During our first visit, Brooke had X-rays taken. The doctor had phoned that night and said that there was something wrong with her neck. We came in to our next appointment, and were shown a severe subluxation complex in Brooke’s spine. Dr. Hardick explained that these problems often occur when the birth process is traumatic, as it was for Brooke. In fact, when Brooke was born, the delivery doctor used forceps to pull her out of my birth canal, so forcefully that she was black and blue. I know now that this trauma is what subluxated her neck, and caused her ADD.

The changes already have been amazing. At 5 years old, Brooke would have a tough time playing with other kids, because they could not understand her. Then she would have a tantrum and scare the kids away. After-school activities and sports were also hard, as Brooke could not pay attention long enough to follow instructions. She would give up very easily. Now, the classes and interaction come naturally, and learning and participating are enjoyable for her. That is the way it should be.

Since starting her adjustments, Brooke speaks clearly, and in sentences. She never stops! She pays attention in school and answers questions. In the last two weeks, Brooke has been printing, counting, drawing pictures, and even adding words to the pictures she draws. Brooke wants to read stories and she can answer questions about them after she is finished. She is clued into everything around her that she hears and sees.

Brooke has now learned to tie her shoes. After our attempts to teach her for 3-4 months, she has now learned it in 10 minutes.

We no longer need to repeat things to Brooke over and over, as we once did. Before, we would ask her to do something and she would just stare at us. We could only give her one-step commands, like, “hang up your coat ... hang up your back pack ... put your shoes away.” A lot of times, Brooke’s shoes would end up in the garbage because she wasn’t paying attention to what she was doing. Now things are automatic. She walks in the door, hangs up her coat and her backpack, she puts her shoes away, washes her hands, gets a drink, and she tidies her play areas and cleans up after herself after eating. All the little things that are routine for us are now routine for her as well.

Every day is a brand new adventure for all of us. She is learning, and we are learning how to have a child who is tuned in about everything in her world. Mommy and Daddy are more aware of everything we do and say ... because now she is so smart!

Who would have known that your spine and nervous system affect so many of your bodily functions and your brain ... and that they could cause so many problems if subluxated the smallest bit. Without the use of drugs, chiropractic care has saved my daughter from so many problems with ADD.
